Stopping Screwworms with Science

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is stepping up efforts to protect American livestock from the return of the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly larva that once devastated cattle and other animals. For the first time, a dedicated sterile screwworm fly production facility will be built on U.S. soil in Edinburg, Texas, aiming to produce hundreds of millions of sterile flies weekly. By releasing these sterile males — which prevent wild females from producing viable offspring — scientists hope to keep this destructive pest at bay and safeguard agricultural industries.
